Fix#411, which went stale in 2018 and is now reopened. You can get a style for a set of cells which uses multiple ranges, e.g. `A1:B2,C5:H10`, but we throw an exception if you try to change the style. I don't know how useful that is, but it's been requested and it's pretty easy to implement with recursion.
The comma in the ranges represents the `union` operator. `getStyle` is very permissive - it will allow almost anything to be specified. However, attempts to use a space as the `intersection` operator, or, indeed, many other nonsense strings, will still be permitted for `getStyle` but will continue to throw an Exception if an attempt is made to alter the style.
A large volume of changes due to "sealed" arrays. Some are sensible; some are very confusing and are handled with `ignore` annotations.
Modules in src with changed code (as opposed to doc-blocks or annotations) are:

Redo of PR #4799 due to failed attempt to resolve merge conflict.
Fix#4798. Partially address #3961. Ods Reader supports very little related to styling. Ods Writer supports many styling details, but has not heretofore supported Number Formatting. 3961 addresses both issues; I created 4798 specifically for the Writer side.
Writing number formats to Excel is pretty simple - you just supply a string and that is used directly in the Xml. Ods is much more complicated - it requires Xml nodes that give a complete description of the styling. For that reason, it is difficult and painstaking to convert from the string that Excel (and PhpSpreadsheet) uses to what Ods requires.
This PR provides code to support almost all the styles defined as constants in Style/NumberFormat. It also allows the user to add code to handle otherwise unhandled styles. New Sample55_DefinedStyles demonstrates the use of all the constant styles, plus the addition of a couple of custom styles. I may be amenable to adding some unsupported styles to the built-in list, but the custom style option will always be around in case I am being slow or unreasonable.
This PR does not fully support Ods Reader handling of styles. However, based on the new Writer output, it will often be able to guess the true type of numeric items and assign an appropriate style for that type. So, for example, if it can identify the field as a date, it will assign a date style. It will not always match the style in the sheet being read, but it is a big advance from just formatting the data as a generic number.
Fix#954, which went stale 6 years ago and which I have now reopened. The `setLocale` method in `Calculation` and `Settings` does not affect the 3 localizable properties in `StringHelper` - `currencyCode`, `decimalSeparator`, and `thousandsSeparator`. One way to work around this problem is to set those properties separately; this is probably how most people handle it. Another way is to call Php's own `setlocale` function; this does not require any foreknowledge of what the values need to be, but it comes with baggage (data is maintained at process level rather than thread level), so its use is discouraged.
This PR adds a new `setLocale` method to `StringHelper`. It sets the 3 properties and the `Calculation` language all at once. It depends on the `Intl` extension, which is a recommendation but not a formal requirement for PhpSpreadsheet; the method will return `false` if `Intl` is not available or it thinks the supplied locale is not valid.
The tests stay; they just no longer run in separate processes. I think that only 2 tests still require separate processes - Helper/SampleTest and Tcpdf/NoDieTest. Aside from a new internal method in IOFactory, all the changes here are to test members.
Intl is only a "suggested" extension. A lot of the NumberFormat Wizard code depends on it. That's insufficient reason to make it required, but the suggestion text now mentions this dependency explicitly. Also clean up the Wizard documentation to reflect some changes since PhpSpreadsheet 1.28.
Fix#1632. Excel automatically supplies a style for cells which contain hyperlinks (e.g. underlined, and blue text changing to purple after the link has been followed). PhpSpreadsheet cannot handle the style automatically. The user can, with some effort, specify a style for the cell which mimics Excel's choice (except for the color change after following).
Examining a sheet with a hyperlink created through Excel, it appears that Excel creates 3 different entries in styles.xml, one for cellStyleXfs, one for cellXfs, and one for cellStyles. It is difficult for me to figure out how they interrelate. This is especially so since PhpSpreadsheet outputs only 1 entry (for the default style) for each of cellStyles and cellStyleXfs. However, it appears that only the cellXfs entry is required, and, when it specifies a font whose color specifies `theme="10"` rather than an rgb value, the style works as expected.
In order to implement this, it is necessary to add a `theme` property, with setter and getter, to Style/Color. There are 12 possible values for theme, 0-11 representing 0=dk1 1=lt1 2=dk2 3=lt2 4-9=accent1-6 10=hlink 11=folHlink. This PR is mainly to allow the use of hlink, but the others are also usable if a use case arises for them. If a theme is set for Color, Xlsx Writer will use the theme rather than rgb when generating the color xml. Other writers will continue to use rgb rather than theme, so there is a use case for setting both if you want to generate both Xlsx and some other format.
The `theme` property will, for now, be ignored except for Font. There is probably a case to be made for using it for Fill, and maybe for Border and other areas that I haven't yet considered. I will wait for someone to make that case before adding those.
In order to make it as easy as possible to use this, a method `setHyperlinkTheme` is added to both Style/Color and Style/Font. The one in Color sets `theme` to the appropriate value. The one in Font calls the one in Color, and also sets `underline` on (this will be honored by other writers in addition to Xlsx).
Samples which use hyperlinks are updated to use `setHyperlinkTheme`. So is `Reader\Xlsx\HyperlinkTest`, with appropriate tests added.
Fix#4438. Do some optimization if Excel value is an integer. This is unlikely to make much of a difference, but the use case seems pretty common (cell represents a date rather than date-time), so we may as well do it. There had been no tests for negative integer values, because Excel does not handle those well, but OpenOffice and Gnumeric handle them just fine, so add some tests for them.
With PhpUnit 10 came the ability to use Php attributes rather than doc-block annotations for things like "data provider". PhpUnit 11 deprecates the use of annotations, and PhpUnit 12 will not not permit their use. Since PhpUnit 11 requires Php8.2+, we cannot adopt it as long as we support Php8.1, which will continue to be the case for some time. However, there is no penalty for early adoption.
Php-cs-fixer can use:

This allows us to run `composer fix` to automate all the needed changes. No manual changes were needed for any of the test members.
With this change, PhpUnit 9 can no longer be used with the test suite. File composer.json is updated to reflect that reality, and phpunit9.xml.dist, which has been supplied in case anyone needed to use PhpUnit 9, is no longer required, and is thus deleted. For now, PhpUnit 11 is not being added as a possibility.
No source code is changed in this PR.
Fix#4125. Currency and Accounting Wizards generate styles for ISO codes, but these are incorrect and cause a problem when Excel tries to open a spreadsheet containing these styles. Debugging that problem, other problems with Wizards came to light:
- Currency Wizard should permit four different styles for negative numbers (as Excel does) - minus sign, minus sign and red font, paretheses, and parenthese and red font. It currently uses only minus sign.
- Accounting Wizard should use parentheses for negative numbers (as Excel does). It currently uses minus sign.
- Accounting Wizard should always use SYMBOL_WITH_SPACING (as Excel does). It currently permits the use of SYMBOL_WITHOUT_SPACING. What WITH_SPACING really does is to ensure decimal-point alignment among adjacent cells in a column with the same format.
- Currency Wizard should always use SYMBOL_WITHOUT_SPACING (as Excel does). It currently permits the use of SYMBOL_WITH_SPACING.
I am correcting these problems by:
- renaming Currency Wizard to CurrencyBase
- adding a `negative` property with setter to it and its constructor.
- adding a new Currency which extends CurrencyBase, always using SYMBOL_WITHOUT_SPACING when formatting.
- having Accounting extend CurrencyBase rather than Currency, always using SYMBOL_WITH_SPACING and NEGATIVE_PARENS when formatting.
- CurrencyBase can be used if the restrictions on Currency and Accounting are not desired (e.g. the suggested accounting constant from [this unimplemented PR](https://github.com/PHPOffice/PhpSpreadsheet/pull/1576)).
Excel does some funny stuff with these formats. In particular, it might try to guess if you have a particular Accounting format in mind. So the Accounting wizard for dollar sign generates a format which (a) matches FORMAT_ACCOUNTING_USD, and (b) Excel (correctly) interprets as an Accounting format for symbol $. On the other hand, the Accounting wizard for euro sign generates a format which (a) matches FORMAT_ACCOUNTING_EUR, but (b) Excel interprets as a custom code rather than an Accounting format. This in itself is not a particularly big deal, but it has made it impossible for me to see exactly what format Excel uses for trailing currency symbols for negative numbers. I can't get them to decimal-point align with positive numbers if I put any kind of space between the trailing parenthesis and the currency symbol, so I omit that. It doesn't look terrible, and it keeps everything aligned, but it might not be what people are used to.
I've also changed the formatting to use spaces rather than non-breaking spaces. They seem to work just fine, and the constants mentioned above use them rather than nbsp.
Fix#4124. Currency formats that contain an ISO currency code which contains one of the characters used to recognize a date format (hmsdy), e.g. [$HUF], are being formatted by PhpSpreadsheet as dates rather than currencies. Code is changed to recognize open bracket followed by dollar sign followed by 3 Latin alphabetic characters followed by close bracket as a non-date.
The latest release seems to not want you to give a class element both a Php type and a doc-block type. I used the "fix" operand to delete the redundant doc-block declarations, with no other changes. So there should be no change to executable code.
While researching another problem, I noticed that font color was not working as expected for Xls Conditional Formats, at least not when a "non-standard" color is used. In such cases, the color might wind up being rendered as black. The reason is as follows. Xls Writer includes a color palette which is dynamically generated from the (non-Conditional) styles used in the workbook. Any colors used in the workbook are indexes to this dynamic palette. However, Conditional colors use a static palette found in class ColorMap to determine the index, so the determination of index will often not find a match, and, if a match is found, it is not necessarily correct. (Also, the ColorMap method was case-sensitive and needs to be insensitive.)
In order to correct this, the `addColor` method in Xls Writer Workbook needs to be accessible to the Conditional logic which is found in Xls Writer Worksheet. This is accomplished by passing the Workbook in the Worksheet's constructor, and changing the method to public, and changing Conditional Font to use this method rather than ColorMap.
The logic for Conditional Fill colors is similarly changed. Although Xls Conditional Fill has appeared to just not work, I was finally able to figure out the problem. Excel Xls Conditional Fill with fill type Solid requires that the fill color be specified as startColor, and that endColor be omitted. Our conditional samples used endColor, and are now changed to use startColor instead; the same is true for our online documentation, and for some tests. Xlsx continues to work as expected, and now Xls does at least some of the time. If the condition is one that Excel Xls does not recognize (e.g. cell contains), it will, of course, not work. A surprising situation that also doesn't work is the use of ISODD or ISEVEN in formulas. Those are "add-in functions" which are handled differently than other functions, and I'm not sure how to support them. I will document this in issue #3403.
Samples 08_Conditional_Formatting(_2) had produced corrupt Xls versions. This turned out to be because the code was using hash codes to avoid having to write out duplicate conditionals; this is often a good idea, but not in this case. Allowing the duplicates fixes the corruption problem.
Conditional Border colors also ought to figure in this change, but the current code does not support Border colors, and I have not yet been able to figure out how to implement it (BIFF format can be very messy to figure out).
With this change, I could delete ColorMap altogether. However, it is a public class with a static public method, so maybe someone is using it for a purpose I'm not familiar with. I will just deprecate it.
Improve documentation within program by making explicit what types of values are allowed for variables described as "mixed". In order to avoid broken functionality, this is done mainly through doc-blocks. This will get us closer to Phpstan Level 9, but many changes will be needed before we can consider that.
Executable code change is to add 2 new methods to Cell - `getValueString` and `getCalculatedValueString`, which are the same as the methods without the String suffix, except that they always return a string result. These are invoked at several places in the code where it makes sense, in particular by Writer code.
Excel supports the following notations for cell styles:
- `[$-F800]` and `[$-x-sysdate]` will format the date according to what appears to be the user's system long date format.
- `[$-F400]` and `[$-x-systime]`, will format the time according to what appears to be the user's system long time format.
- Builtin style 14 will format date according to what appears to be the user's system short date format.
- Builtin style 22 will format date and time according to the user's preference. It appears that the date portion is formatted according to the user's system short date format, but the time portion is formatted according to a format which is neither system short time format nor system long time format, so I'm not sure how this preference is set.
For F800, sysdate, F400, and systime, any other characters in the style are ignored, except that, if you have more than one of this type of block in the style, Excel will treat it as corrupt (error message on open and style changed to General).
Support is added for the new codes. In addition, note that the value displayed in the cell may differ in different environments. To give the PhpSpreadsheet programmer an opportunity to emulate what the intended audience will most often see, properties `shortDateFormat` (default value is builtin 14), `longDateFormat` (default value is `dddd, mmmm d, yyyy`), `dateTimeFormat` (defaults to builtin 22), and `timeFormat` (default is `FORMAT_DATE_TIME2`), with corresponding setters and getters, are added to Style/NumberFormat. Note that, if these properties are set to some other value in PhpSpreadsheet, it will not affect the values in the cell or the style - it is merely a convenience for the programmer. It will, however, affect column width if autosize is specified for the column. If the programmer does not alter any of the new properties, the output should be unchanged from before for builtins 14 and 22.
The new styles are also recognized by the `TEXT` function. In this case, the cell's calculated value may differ from user to user.
Note that this is a small subset of adding locale information to styles. No attempt is made to support any of the other possibilities - locale data will continue to be passed through to the spreadsheet, but PhpSpreadsheet will discard it before attempting to generate the formatted value of a cell.
Change "mixed" declarations to more accurate types in test members; in particular, change those that would be flagged if we were to run Phpstan at level 9 (we currently run level 8). I may or may not follow up with source code (over 700 level-9 problems remain for src), but, as with strict typing, there is no reason to avoid the effort for test members.
It was necessary to update some doc blocks in src to accommodate this change. However, no executable code is touched.
This was suggested by the investigation of issue #3811. No fix is necessary for the issue. However, two possible code solutions (Php setlocale, which comes with certain design flaws, and StringHelper set(Decimal/Thousands)Separator were suggested, and neither is adequately tested. This PR adds such tests.
Unusually, getting StringHelper Decimal Separator, Thousands Separator, and Currency Code can result in a change to those properties. So, the existing design in several tests where those properties are captured in Setup and restored in Teardown do not work quite as designed. Instead, the ability to set those properties to their default value (null) is added, and the tests re-done to restore the default in Teardown.
The two methods yield the same results when parsing input. However, they diverge when examining output fields through `getFormattedValue`. Such output is currently correct (usually) when using setlocale, but not when using StringHelper. The former works through the 'trick' of using `sprintf(%f)`, which generates a locale-aware string. However, using non-locale-aware `sprintf(%F)` followed by `str_replace` will produce the correct result for both setlocale and StringHelper. One place in the code uses a cast to string, which is incorrect for both methods. Following that up with the same str_replace makes it correct for both. These changes permit, but do not require, the user to avoid setlocale altogether.
It remains an open question whether Settings/Calculation::setLocale should set DecimalSeparator, CurrencySeparator, and CurrencyCode. That makes logical sense, but it would be a breaking change, and having to explicitly set those values when using setLocale does not seem especially burdensome. For now, such a change will not be made.
While we might never be able to have 100% of our code strict, we can at
the very least do it for all of our tests. This ensures that our tests
are using our API with the types as intended by the test author, and not
silently be cast to what our API requires.
And quite a bit more manual changes. The idea is that typing of our
tests can be a bit more loose, so we assume PHPDoc is mostly correct. If
that happens to be wrong, it should be caught by the tests themselves.
* Php 8.3 Problem - RLM Added to NumberFormatter Currency - Minor Break
Fix#3571. This isn't truly a Php8.3 problem - it all depends on the version of ICU with which Php was linked. ICU 72.1 adds an RLM (right-to-left mark) character in some circumstances when creating a currency format. This broke some tests for the Currency and Accounting wizards, and can result in a difference in the appearance of some spreadsheet cells.
This PR changes code to strip out the RLM or not depending on a new property. The new property could default to true (so end-users will not see any change no matter what release of ICU is used), or false. For the latter, users might see a break, but my assumption is that the ICU developers have good reasons for their change, and it's probably best to go along with it. If users wish to retain the existing behavior, they can do so by adding the following code before setting the wizard's locale:
