Dealing mostly with mixed variable type. In a great many cases, problems can be resolved replacing `getValue` with `getValueString` or `getCalculatedValue` with `getCalculatedValueString`.
We currently use Phpstan Release 1. Release 2 has been available for some time, and we would like to stay current if possible. In order to get to Release 2, we first have to pass the "bleeding edge" tests for Release 1. I will do this by generating a new baseline using bleeding edge, then fix the baseline errors over several different PR's. This is the first of those.
It currently parsed by byte, which is not a good thing in a UTF-8 system. See the discussion at the bottom of PR #4203. That turns out to not be the change which led to this problem; that would have been PR #4323. That change came about because using Composer/Pcre revealed bugs in several regular expressions used in Writer/Xls/Parser. This ticket comes about because more bugs were revealed in the same module. The problem is that the `advance` method needs to process formulas character by character, but is instead doing it byte by byte. It is changed to advance by characters, and tests for non-ASCII characters are added.
Fix#4331. Parser treats TRUE/FALSE as functions rather than constants, which is nominally harmless, but it then expects an argument count of 0 and instead sees null-string. Changed to recognize this situation and leave TRUE/FALSE/TRUE()/FALSE() unchanged.
The native preg functions (preg_match, preg_replace, etc.) often require us to add a lot of useless boilerplate code to satisfy Phpstan, Scrutinizer, etc. Composer/Pcre offers us a way to remove that boilerplate, thereby giving us a cleaner codebase. I decided to try it on a few modules, and saw a result that clearly demonstrated the usefulness of doing this (aside from the cleaner codebase).
Sample 22_Reader_issue1767 reads an Xlsx spreadsheet with complex sheet names used in defined names, and writes it to Xlsx and Xls output files. When I changed Writer/Xls/Parser to use Composer/Pcre, this sample failed in many different places writing the Xls file. It turns out that some regexes were failing not because the string didn't match, but because the regex encountered "catastrophic backtracing". Composer/Pcre throws an exception when this happens; the native preg_match does return false, but we were not checking for that. The regexes in question are now changed to something which works, and formal unit tests are added for them. Finding this previously undetected error indicates that we should proceed with this change.
An alternative to using Composer/Pcre would be to test for false after all the preg calls. I have done this in the two samples changed with this PR. That seems adequate for a small number of changes, but it really just makes for more clutter considering the large number of regexps that we use in our code. I think Composer/Pcre is a better choice.
It isn't quite transparent. Composer forces all regexps to use PREG_UNMATCHED_AS_NULL, so some match fields will now be null instead of null-string (or non-existent if the unmatched field comes at the end). Our test suite doesn't report any problem (yet) due to this change, although Phpstan is sensitive to it. Several Phpstan annotations were eliminated due to this change, but some others are now needed.
It is not necessary to do this all at once. This PR addresses all the calls in Writer. I intend to address other components in several tickets.
With PhpUnit 10 came the ability to use Php attributes rather than doc-block annotations for things like "data provider". PhpUnit 11 deprecates the use of annotations, and PhpUnit 12 will not not permit their use. Since PhpUnit 11 requires Php8.2+, we cannot adopt it as long as we support Php8.1, which will continue to be the case for some time. However, there is no penalty for early adoption.
Php-cs-fixer can use:
```
'php_unit_attributes' => ['keep_annotations' => false],
```
This allows us to run `composer fix` to automate all the needed changes. No manual changes were needed for any of the test members.
With this change, PhpUnit 9 can no longer be used with the test suite. File composer.json is updated to reflect that reality, and phpunit9.xml.dist, which has been supplied in case anyone needed to use PhpUnit 9, is no longer required, and is thus deleted. For now, PhpUnit 11 is not being added as a possibility.
No source code is changed in this PR.
Fix#3195. Applying a conditional style to an entire row or column applies the Excel 2007+ limits (16,384 columns and 1,048,576 rows). However, Excel 2003- has different limits (256 columns and 65,536 rows). Trying to use the larger limits in an Xls spreadsheet results in a corrupt file. Xls Writer is changed to adjust ranges appropriately.
The issue also mentions that there might be a problem if a spreadsheet contains CF rules for both whole rows and whole columns. I am unable to corroborate this; the code from the new test can be used to generate an Xls file which is usable, and which has both row and column conditional styles.
However, testing showed that Xls Writer did not handle conditions correctly for floating point, negative integers, or integers > 65535. These should now be handled correctly.
The latest release seems to not want you to give a class element both a Php type and a doc-block type. I used the "fix" operand to delete the redundant doc-block declarations, with no other changes. So there should be no change to executable code.
Provide a means to convert a range, possibly with unions and possibly with intersections, into something that both Excel and PhpSpreadsheet can handle. Intersections are changed into unions of the individual cells which they comprise. With this change, Xls Writer now handles intersections (previously it would have thrown an Exception or created a corrupt worksheet if this was attempted), and Xlsx Writer works correctly (it seemed to before, but Excel didn't understand what it wrote). Worksheet::getConditionalRange and ::getConditionalStyles would previously have thrown an Exception when presented with an intersection, and will no longer do so.
**NOTE:** Intersection support is limited to Conditional ranges. Use of intersections in other contexts will usually not achieve the desired result.
While researching another problem, I noticed that font color was not working as expected for Xls Conditional Formats, at least not when a "non-standard" color is used. In such cases, the color might wind up being rendered as black. The reason is as follows. Xls Writer includes a color palette which is dynamically generated from the (non-Conditional) styles used in the workbook. Any colors used in the workbook are indexes to this dynamic palette. However, Conditional colors use a static palette found in class ColorMap to determine the index, so the determination of index will often not find a match, and, if a match is found, it is not necessarily correct. (Also, the ColorMap method was case-sensitive and needs to be insensitive.)
In order to correct this, the `addColor` method in Xls Writer Workbook needs to be accessible to the Conditional logic which is found in Xls Writer Worksheet. This is accomplished by passing the Workbook in the Worksheet's constructor, and changing the method to public, and changing Conditional Font to use this method rather than ColorMap.
The logic for Conditional Fill colors is similarly changed. Although Xls Conditional Fill has appeared to just not work, I was finally able to figure out the problem. Excel Xls Conditional Fill with fill type Solid requires that the fill color be specified as startColor, and that endColor be omitted. Our conditional samples used endColor, and are now changed to use startColor instead; the same is true for our online documentation, and for some tests. Xlsx continues to work as expected, and now Xls does at least some of the time. If the condition is one that Excel Xls does not recognize (e.g. cell contains), it will, of course, not work. A surprising situation that also doesn't work is the use of ISODD or ISEVEN in formulas. Those are "add-in functions" which are handled differently than other functions, and I'm not sure how to support them. I will document this in issue #3403.
Samples 08_Conditional_Formatting(_2) had produced corrupt Xls versions. This turned out to be because the code was using hash codes to avoid having to write out duplicate conditionals; this is often a good idea, but not in this case. Allowing the duplicates fixes the corruption problem.
Conditional Border colors also ought to figure in this change, but the current code does not support Border colors, and I have not yet been able to figure out how to implement it (BIFF format can be very messy to figure out).
With this change, I could delete ColorMap altogether. However, it is a public class with a static public method, so maybe someone is using it for a purpose I'm not familiar with. I will just deprecate it.
Change "mixed" declarations to more accurate types in test members; in particular, change those that would be flagged if we were to run Phpstan at level 9 (we currently run level 8). I may or may not follow up with source code (over 700 level-9 problems remain for src), but, as with strict typing, there is no reason to avoid the effort for test members.
It was necessary to update some doc blocks in src to accommodate this change. However, no executable code is touched.
While we might never be able to have 100% of our code strict, we can at
the very least do it for all of our tests. This ensures that our tests
are using our API with the types as intended by the test author, and not
silently be cast to what our API requires.
And quite a bit more manual changes. The idea is that typing of our
tests can be a bit more loose, so we assume PHPDoc is mostly correct. If
that happens to be wrong, it should be caught by the tests themselves.
Fix#642. Opened over 5 years ago, probably the oldest problem I've worked on. And https://github.com/PHPOffice/PHPExcel/issues/1320, opened a year before that. And https://github.com/SpartnerNL/Laravel-Excel/issues/1521.
Shared/StringHelper::UTF8toBIFF8UnicodeLong calculates incorrect length for strings when they contain characters outside Unicode BMP. Xls uses UTF-16 to encode its strings, and characters outside BMP require a surrogate pair to encode. PhpSpreadsheet (and PhpExcel before it) have been counting these as a single character, but Excel counts them as 2. Change to compute the length as half the number of bytes in the UTF-16 string, as Excel does.
A formal test is added, but it's a bit difficult to follow. So I aso added a non-BMP emoji to 27template.xls, which will cause it to be both read by Xls reader and written by Xls writer. This would previously have created a corrupt worksheet. The emoji is now handled correctly.
Successor to PR #3523. There are 494 single-line changes (`public function provider` to `public static function provider`) in this PR. None of these were made manually; they were all created with the following script (adapted from
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/25909820/how-to-recursively-iterate-through-files-in-php):
```php
$dir = 'C:/git/unit10prep2/tests/PhpSpreadsheetTests';
$it = new RecursiveDirectoryIterator($dir);
// Loop through files
foreach(new RecursiveIteratorIterator($it) as $file) {
if ($file->getExtension() === 'php') {
$contents = file_get_contents($file);
$new = preg_replace('/public function (\\w*)([Pp])rovider/', 'public static function $1$2rovider', $contents);
if ($new !== $contents) {
echo "changing $file\n";
file_put_contents($file, $new);
}
}
}
```
After this PR, there will be one more, with a small number of test changes, and enabling PhpUnit 10 for Php 8.1+.
* PhpUnit 10 Compatibility Part 1
This is not a change to move to PhpUnit 10. There is no compelling reason to do so at this time, although it is bound to happen eventually. There are a staggering number of problems (somewhere around 3,000) with the current test suite under PhpUnit 10; this is an attempt to get ahead of the curve by addressing them now.
Method `setOutputCallback` has gone away. This affects only Helper/SampleTest. It appears that `ob_start` and its allies provide an effective equivalent. FWIW, the absence of `setOutputCallback` is a good indication of whether or not PhpUnit 10 is in use, and I will use that fact in a few tests.
Class `ComplexAssert` with no constructor, and always used with `new ComplexAssert()`, extends `TestCase`. Apparently, the constructor for TestCase requires an argument, and PhpUnit 10 complains about not supplying one. Adding an empty constructor to ComplexAssert avoids this problem.
There are two very minor source changes, to Calculation/Calculation and Reader/Xlsx, where problems were exposed with PhpUnit 10 that had not been previously been exposed. AFAIK, these are the only source changes required; the rest of the changes are to test members.
The bulk of the problems are because PhpUnit 10 insists that provider methods be static. Most of those can be changed by a script without any further action; those changes will constitute the Part 2 counterpart of this PR. In this PR you will find the exceptional cases that can't be automated for one reason or another. The tests for Database functions have mild complications that are easily handled. Most of the other provider changes in this PR are because the method names didn't follow an established pattern ('provider' isn't part of the method name); those are also easily handled manually. Modifying the following tests provided significant challenges:
- Writer/Xls/WorkbookTest testAddColor
- Worksheet/Table/TableTest testSetRangeValidRange
The handling of warning messages issued by the code differs in PhpUnit 10. According to the change log, "This means that using PHP functionality which triggers E_DEPRECATED, E_NOTICE, E_STRICT, or E_WARNING or calling code which triggers E_USER_DEPRECATED, E_USER_NOTICE, or E_USER_WARNING can no longer hide a bug in your code." To me, the effect of that change seems to be exactly the opposite - such messages were available to the test with PhpUnit 9 (so we could test for them), and are no longer available (so we can't). I haven't even succeeded with a custom error message handler as part of the script. I will continue to investigate, but, for now, will skip some tests under PhpUnit 10 for the following:
- Shared/OleTest testChainedWriteMode and testChainedBadPath
- Reader/Html/HtmlLoadStringTest testLoadInvalidString
- Reader/Html/HtmlTest testBadHtml
* Scrutinize, and Parent Construct
Parent construct suggested by @MarkBaker.
* Redo Tests Dependent on Warning Messages
Warning (and other) messages are handled differently in PhpUnit 10 than in earlier versions.
Fix#3369. The parser had failed to account for `TRUE` and `FALSE` when supplied as arguments to a function.
I had hoped to be able to do something about its inability to handle defined names as well. I failed. I think another section might need to be added to the Writer output which specifies the defined names. I haven't yet located any suitable documentation.
* Eliminate Some Scrutinizer 'Major' Problems Part 5
More of the same. 2 or 3 of these still to go after this.
Note one deprecation. Shared/Drawing has a method imagecreatefrombmp. However, that was introduced as a native PHP function with 7.2, so the method is no longer needed.
* More Silliness
Keep trying.
* If At First You Don't Succeed
Try, try again.
For one of the Phpstan upgrades, some message text had changed so drastically that the only practical solution at the time was to move the messages from phpstan-baseline.neon to phpstan.neon.dist. This was not ideal, but it allowed us time to move on and study the errors, which I have now done. At one point, Parser is expecting a variable to be an array, and that was not clear from the code. If not an array, the code will error out (which was Phpstan's concern); I have changed it to throw an exception instead. This satisfies Phpstan, and I can get the message out of neon.dist (without needing to restore it to baseline). Unsurprisingly, the exception was never thrown in the existing test suite, although I added a couple of tests to exercise that code.
In Helper/Dimension, Phpstan flagged a statement inappropriately. I suppressed the message using an annotation and filed a bug report https://github.com/phpstan/phpstan/issues/7563. A fix for the problem was merged yesterday, which is good, but it puts us in a tenuous position. The annotation is needed now, but, when the fix is inevitably pushed to the version we use, the no-longer-needed annotation will trigger a different message. Recode so that neither the current nor the future versions will issue a message, eliminating the annotation in the process.
* Document Properties - Coverage and 32-bit-safe Timestamps
While researching an issue, I noticed that coverage of Document/Properties was poor. Further, the use of int timestamps will eventually lead to problems for 32-bit PHP (see issue #1826).
Coverage Changes:
- Many property types with no special handling are enumerated but not tested. These are removed, but will continue to function as before.
- Existing code theoretically allows property to be set to an object, but there is no means to read or write such a property, and, even if there were, I don't believe Excel supports it. Setting a property to an object will now be changed to a no-op (can throw an exception if preferred).
- Since the Properties object now has no members which are themselves objects, there is no need for a deep clone. The untested __clone method is removed.
- Large switch statements are replaced with associative arrays. Scrutinizer will like that.
- Coverage is now 100%.
<!-- end of coverage changes list -->
Timestamp Changes:
- Timestamps will be stored as int if possible, or float if not. This is, or will soon be, needed for 32-bit systems. Tests have been added for beyond-epoch dates, and run successfully with 32-bit.
- LibreOffice doesn't quite get the Created/Modified properties correct. These are written to the file as a string which includes offset from UTC, but LibreOffice ignores the offset portion when displaying them. Code had been generating these in UTC, but now generates them in default timezone, which should meet user's expectations.
<!-- end of timestamp changes list -->
Other Changes:
- Custom properties added to ODS Writer.
- Samples had not been generating any ODS files. One is now generated.
- Ods uses a single 'keywords' property rather than multiple 'keyword' properties.
- Breaking change - default company is changed to null string from Microsoft Corporation.
- Breaking change of sorts - PropertiesTest incorrectly tested a custom date property against a string, Reader/XlsxTest correctly tested against a timestamp converted to a string. PropertiesTest was defective, and will no longer work as coded; anyone using it as a model will likewise have a problem.
- PHP8.1 has been complaining for weeks about a time zone conversion test. I have now downloaded a version, and changed the code so that it will work in 8.1 as well as prior releases. (It is still likely that the existing code should work in 8.1, but I haven't yet figured out how to file a bug report.) In the course of testing, 3 additional 8.1 problems were reported (all along the lines of "can't pass null to strpos"), and are fixed with null coercion.
- Two Calculation tests failed because of large results on 32-bit system. These are corrected by allowing the functions involved to return float|int rather than int. I suspect that there are other functions with this problem, and will investigate as a follow-up activity.
- See issue #2090. I believe that changes between 17.1 and master will merely cause the problematic spreadsheet to fail in a different way. I believe that enclosing in quotes some variables passed to Document/Properties by Reader/Xlsx will eliminate the problem, but, in the absence of an example file, cannot say for sure.
- Properties tests are now separated out from Reader/XlsxTest and Reader/OdsTest, and now test both Read and Write (via reload).
<!-- end of other changes list -->
Miscellaneous Notes:
- There remains no support for Custom Properties in Xls Reader or Writer.
- We now have default timezones for all of PHP itself, Shared/Date, and Shared/Timezone. That is least one too many. I was unable to disentangle the latter two for this change, but will look into deprecating one or the other in future.
* Phpstan
6 baseline deletions, 2 docblock changes
* Scrutinizer's Turn
3 minor errors that hadn't blocked the request.
19_NamedRange.php was not changed to use absolute addressing when that was introduced to Named Ranges. Consequently, the output from this sample has been wrong ever since, for both Xls and Xlsx.
There was an additional problem with Xls. It appears that the Xls Writer Parser does not parse multiple concatenations using the ampersand operator correctly. So, `=B1+" "+B2` was parsed as `=B1+" "`. I believe that this is due to ampersand being treated as a condition rather than an operator; `A1>A2>A3` isn't valid, but `A1&A2&A3` is. My original PR (#1992, which I will now close) only partially resolved this, but I think moving ampersand handling from `condition` to `expression` is fully successful.
There are already more than ample tests for Named Ranges, so I did not add a new one for that purpose. However, I did add a new test for the Xls parser problem.
* Initial work modifying the way named ranges are stored, and handled by the calculation engine
This should provide better support for:

* Xls Writer - Correct Timestamp Bug, Improve Coverage
I believe that Xls Writer is 100% covered now.
The Xls Writer sets its timestamp incorrectly. The problem is actually
in Shared/Ole::localDateToOLE, which converts its timestamp using
gmmktime; mktime is correct. If I save a file at 3:00 p.m. in San Francisco,
this bug means the time is actually recorded as 3:00 p.m. UTC.
A consequence of this is that if you use Phpspreadsheet to read the
file and save it as a new Xls, the creation timestamp goes further
and further back in time with each generation (or further forward
if east of Greenwich). One of the tests added confirms that
the creation timestamp is consistent with the start and end times
of the test.
The major change in coverage is adding tests to save GIF and BMP
images, which aren't supported in Xls, but are converted to PNG
in the PhpSpreadsheet code.
No code changes. The tests in all of these scripts write to at least
one temporary file, which is then read and not used again. The file
should be deleted to avoid filling up the disk system.
* Handle Error in Formula Processing Better for Xls
When there is an error writing a formula to an Xls file,
which seems to happen when a defined name is part of a formula,
the cell is currently left blank. A better result would be to
write the calculated value of the formula.
* Making Changes Suggested in Review
Per comment from Mark Baker:
1. Made return codes from writeFormula into constants.
2. Skipped redundant call to getCellValue when possible.
3. Added support for bool type, adding additional tests
for bool and string.
Per comment from PowerKiki:
1. Used standardized convention for assigning file name in test.
Since before this change, save would throw Exception, I kept
the unlink for the file in tearDown.
Because even if it doesn't make a difference in practice, it is
technically more correct to call static methods statically. It
also better advertise that those methods can be used from any context.
